Case Study: Network Transformation for a Leading Supermarket Retailer
Overview
This large-scale network transformation project involved upgrading wireless infrastructure to in excess of 1,500 sites in the UK for a leading retailer.
The scope of the project included transitioning from Cisco switching and wireless access points to Juniper Mist technology and upgrading to Wi-Fi 6e.
These upgrades provided higher-density connectivity and enhanced reliability across 2.4, 5.0, & 6.0 GHz spectrums.
The upgraded wireless network now supports secure EPOS systems, corporate and HR platforms, BMR and secure guest Wi-Fi addressing previous issues of poor wireless coverage that impacted application performance and user experience.
Challenges
The existing wireless infrastructure was more than six years old and although this was functioning within the parameters of its original specification, the requirements of modern wireless coverage had radically changed.
Wireless coverage was localized in departmental areas which needed to be expanded to ensure thorough site coverage including warehouses, cold storage areas, petrol stations and all areas of the shop floor.
An additional challenge involved maintaining consistent wireless performance in areas prone to environmental interference and high usage density. Warehouses and cold storage units can present obstacles such as metal structures and temperature fluctuations, while petrol stations and busy shop floors often experience peak usage periods that stress the network.
Designing a wireless infrastructure that minimises signal degradation, ensures reliable connectivity, and provides high-speed access for multiple devices in these demanding conditions was essential for the solution across the site.
Break - Anecdote - Challenge/Complexities Statement.
Solution
Our team implemented a comprehensive approach to deliver the transformation:
Technology Refresh: Transitioned to Juniper Mist for advanced network management and optimisation, upgraded to Wi-Fi 6Ghz for improved capacity, reliability, and device support across all spectrums.
Efficient Installations: Refined installation processes to reduce time by 50%, cutting the duration from six hours to three per site, outperforming previous benchmarks throughout the implementation process.
Complex Site Rollout: Managed challenging installations including working at heights, with precision and compliance to safety standards.
Out-of-Hours Execution: Conducted installations during non-business hours to minimise disruption and ensure timely completion.
Comprehensive Documentation: Delivered detailed AP placement and configuration records to streamline future maintenance and ensure transparency.
Results
The project achieved significant improvements across the retailer’s network:
Enhanced Connectivity: A template high-density wireless coverage across all sites, supporting uninterrupted functionality for critical applications.
Operational Excellence: Improved application performance for EPOS platforms, corporate systems and HR tools, enabling smooth operations.
Time Efficiency: Installation times cut by 30% from pilot to main rollout, setting a new benchmark for efficiency.
Zero Revisit Rate: Eliminated the need for revisits through careful planning and the use of experienced technicians.
Nationwide Success: Delivered consistent results across urban and desolate areas, ensuring dependable connectivity in every location.
